Decaf Ground Coffee at Terres de Café

A great decaf ground coffee is far removed from the bland cup sometimes associated with decaffeination. Our two decaf coffees are selected and artisanally roasted in the Paris region with the same attention to quality as the rest of our range.

They are grouped within a dedicated decaf coffee range, separate from the SCA score categories – 80+, 85+ and 88+ – used for our caffeinated coffees, as decaffeination can influence the conventional sensory evaluation of specialty coffee.

As with the rest of our ground coffee range, the grind size is adjusted according to the brewing method selected when ordering, whether you use a filter coffee maker, moka pot, French press, espresso machine or compatible refillable coffee capsules.

How Does Water Decaffeination Work?

With water decaffeination, caffeine is removed from green coffee through a process based on water and filtration, without directly using conventional chemical solvents.

This approach is designed to remove the vast majority of the caffeine while preserving as much of the coffee's original aromatic character as possible.

For our Jaen Organic Decaf, the water used during the decaffeination process is filtered before being returned to the local water system, helping to limit the environmental impact associated with the process.

Our Decaf Ground Coffees

  • Volcan Azul Decaf: a coffee from Finca Volcan Azul in the Poás Volcano region of Costa Rica. Produced from the Caturra variety and processed using the Honey method before water decaffeination, it offers notes of cocoa, cane sugar and citrus. It is roasted with espresso preparation in mind and is one of our popular decaf coffees.
  • Jaen Organic Decaf: an organic coffee from the Cajamarca region of Peru, decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process. Its flavour profile features notes of chocolate, almond and coconut, and it is also roasted for espresso.

Decaf Ground Coffee vs Decaf Whole Bean Coffee: What's the Difference?

As with caffeinated coffee, decaf whole bean coffee generally retains its aromatic qualities for longer than pre-ground coffee. Grinding increases the surface area exposed to oxygen, accelerating oxidation and the evolution of the coffee's aromas.

Decaf ground coffee remains the most convenient option if you do not have a coffee grinder or simply want coffee that is ready to brew. If you prefer to grind your beans immediately before preparation, our decaf whole bean selection features the same two coffees.

Which Grind Size Should You Choose for Decaf Ground Coffee?

The coffee grind size has a direct influence on extraction and should be adapted to your brewing method.

Brewing MethodRecommended Grind
Espresso MachineFine
Moka PotMedium-fine
Filter Coffee MakerMedium
French PressCoarse
SiphonMedium to medium-coarse, depending on the recipe

This is why the intended brewing method is specified when ordering your decaf ground coffee. Choosing the appropriate grind helps achieve a more consistent extraction with your equipment.

How to Store Decaf Ground Coffee

Keep your decaf ground coffee away from light, heat, moisture and significant temperature fluctuations. Store it in its original resealable bag or a suitable airtight container at a stable room temperature.

For everyday storage, a cool, dry cupboard is generally preferable to the refrigerator, where repeated exposure to moisture and temperature changes can affect the coffee.

Because grinding increases the coffee's exposure to oxygen, ground decaf coffee generally evolves faster than the equivalent whole bean coffee. It is therefore best to consume an opened bag within a reasonable period and reseal it carefully after each use.

FAQ About Decaf Ground Coffee

Does Decaf Ground Coffee Really Contain Less Caffeine?

Yes. The decaffeination process removes the vast majority of caffeine from green coffee beans before roasting. Decaf coffee is not necessarily completely caffeine-free, however, as a small residual amount may remain.

Does Decaf Ground Coffee Keep as Long as Decaf Whole Bean Coffee?

No. Ground coffee generally loses its aromatic qualities faster because grinding increases the surface area exposed to oxygen. Decaf whole bean coffee therefore tends to retain its aromas for longer than the equivalent pre-ground coffee.

Can I Choose a Grind Suited to My Coffee Maker?

Yes. Our decaf ground coffee references are available with different grind options according to your brewing method, including filter coffee makers, moka pots, French presses, siphons, espresso machines and compatible refillable coffee capsules.
