Organic Ground Coffee at Terres de Café

An organic specialty ground coffee meets two complementary sets of standards: those of organic farming, which restrict the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, and those associated with specialty coffee, where careful selection and detailed traceability by country, region or farm play an essential role.

Our organic ground coffees receive the same artisanal roasting carried out in the Paris region as the rest of our range. As with all our ground coffee, the grind size is adjusted according to the brewing method selected when ordering, whether you use a filter coffee maker, moka pot, French press, espresso machine or compatible refillable coffee capsules.

How to Choose Your Organic Ground Coffee

Choosing the right organic ground coffee depends primarily on the flavour profile you enjoy and the story and production methods behind each origin.

  • Felix Project – Caranavi Organic: a coffee from Caranavi, La Paz, Bolivia, grown by Felix Chambi in a complex certified organic agroforestry system. This bespoke lot is part of a project supporting both the protection of the region's coffee forests and local women coffee producers. Expect notes of caramel and intense dark chocolate, followed by a nougat finish.
  • Altos de Bijao Estate Project Organic: a Colombian coffee from Santander, produced by Oscar Daza in a complex certified organic agroforestry system. The project gives greater value to smaller coffee beans that would otherwise typically be sold at lower prices on the local market, helping to improve producer income. Expect notes of red fruit and sugar cane.
  • KSF Goma Forest Organic: an organic coffee from the Limmu region of Ethiopia, grown by Khalid Shifa according to forest coffee principles. It produces a powerful cup with notes of cardamom, marzipan, dark chocolate and orange blossom.
  • Taba Hills Natural Organic: a Rwandan coffee produced from certified organic Bourbon plots cultivated by the Taba community across 15 villages. Expect aromas of caramel and chocolate on the nose, followed by yellow fruit and milk chocolate in the cup.

These four coffees illustrate the diversity of our organic coffee sourcing, from social projects and complex agroforestry systems to forest coffee and small producer communities.

Organic Coffee: What Difference Does It Make in the Cup?

Organic certification does not guarantee a particular flavour profile. It primarily relates to farming and production standards rather than the sensory characteristics of the finished coffee.

In specialty coffee, organic certification can be associated with agricultural systems that also place an emphasis on biodiversity and diversified farming. These include complex agroforestry systems, where coffee trees grow alongside shade trees and food crops, as well as forest coffee, where coffee is cultivated within a forest ecosystem.

At Taba Hills, for example, coffee trees grow alongside beans, squash and aubergines beneath the shade of banana trees. KSF Goma Forest illustrates another approach, with coffee cultivated within the forest environment itself.

Ultimately, the flavour of an organic specialty coffee depends on many factors, including terroir, altitude, coffee variety, processing method, roasting and brewing.

Organic Ground Coffee vs Organic Whole Bean Coffee: Which Format Should You Choose?

Organic whole bean coffee generally retains its aromatic qualities for longer than pre-ground coffee because grinding increases the surface area exposed to oxygen and accelerates oxidation.

Organic ground coffee, however, is particularly convenient if you do not have a coffee grinder or simply want to save time in your everyday coffee routine. If you prefer to grind your coffee immediately before brewing, our organic whole bean selection features these same origins.

Which Grind Size Should You Choose for Organic Ground Coffee?

The coffee grind size has a direct influence on extraction and should be adapted to your brewing method.

Brewing MethodRecommended Grind
Espresso MachineFine
Moka PotMedium-fine
Filter Coffee MakerMedium
French PressCoarse
SiphonMedium to medium-coarse, depending on the recipe

This is why the intended brewing method is specified when ordering your organic ground coffee. Choosing the appropriate grind helps achieve a more consistent extraction with your equipment.

How to Store Organic Ground Coffee

Keep your organic ground coffee away from light, heat, moisture and significant temperature fluctuations. Store it in its original resealable bag or a suitable airtight container at a stable room temperature.

For everyday storage, a cool, dry cupboard is generally preferable to the refrigerator, where repeated exposure to moisture and temperature changes can affect the coffee.

Because grinding increases the surface area exposed to oxygen, ground coffee generally evolves faster than whole bean coffee. It is therefore best to consume an opened bag within a reasonable period and reseal it carefully after each use.

FAQ About Organic Ground Coffee

What Is the Difference Between Organic Ground Coffee and Regular Ground Coffee?

Organic coffee is produced according to certified organic farming standards, which restrict the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and establish specific requirements throughout production and certification.

At Terres de Café, our organic coffees receive the same careful selection and artisanal roasting as the rest of our specialty coffee range.

Does Organic Coffee Taste Different?

Not necessarily. Organic certification does not directly determine how a coffee tastes. Its flavour profile depends primarily on factors such as origin, terroir, variety, processing method, roasting and preparation.

Some of our organic coffees are also grown in agroforestry or forest-based systems that encourage more diversified coffee-growing environments, but these farming practices do not guarantee a particular flavour profile.

Can I Choose a Grind Suited to My Coffee Maker?

Yes. Our organic ground coffees are available with different grind options according to your brewing method, including filter coffee makers, moka pots, French presses, siphons, espresso machines and compatible refillable coffee capsules.

Does Organic Ground Coffee Keep as Long as Organic Whole Bean Coffee?

No. Ground coffee generally loses its aromatic qualities faster because grinding increases the surface area exposed to oxygen. Organic whole bean coffee therefore tends to retain its aromas for longer than the equivalent pre-ground coffee.
