How to Choose a Coffee Machine

The coffee machine market offers a wide range of options: manual espresso machines with portafilters, capsule coffee machines, pod machines and bean-to-cup machines with built-in grinders. Before comparing brands such as De'Longhi, Krups, Philips or others, it is worth starting with the way you actually want to prepare and enjoy your coffee.

Capsules, Pods or Coffee Beans: Which Format for Which Coffee Machine?

Capsule coffee machines, such as Nespresso or Dolce Gusto systems, are designed for convenience. There is no grind size to adjust and coffee can be prepared quickly with very little handling. Terres de Café offers Nespresso-compatible capsules, making it possible to combine this convenient format with specialty coffee.

Coffee pod machines work on a similar principle but use soft pods or ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) pods, depending on the machine. The brewing system and final cup differ from those of capsule machines and traditional espresso machines, so it is important to choose pods specifically designed for your equipment.

Manual espresso machines using ground coffee and a portafilter require greater involvement. Grind size, dose, distribution, tamping and extraction all influence the final result. In return, these machines provide considerable control over the espresso recipe. With this type of equipment, the quality and consistency of the coffee grinder are particularly important.

Finally, a bean-to-cup coffee machine combines a coffee bean hopper, built-in grinder and automatic extraction system. Models such as the De'Longhi Magnifica and various Philips machines can prepare different coffee drinks with minimal handling. Their convenience does, however, come with regular cleaning and maintenance requirements.

Coffee Machines and Specialty Coffee: Finding the Right Combination

A high-performance coffee machine cannot compensate for unsuitable or poorly roasted coffee, just as excellent coffee needs an appropriate brewing method to express its full potential.

At Terres de Café, the coffees we select are chosen with a strong focus on origin and traceability. They are artisanally roasted in France to highlight distinctive sensory profiles, from dense, chocolatey espresso to more delicate, fruity or floral filter coffee.

For espresso machines, a fine grind is generally required, with traditional espresso extraction typically taking place at around 9 bars of pressure at the coffee puck. The ideal grind size, dose and extraction time should then be adjusted according to the coffee, machine and desired result.

For filter coffee makers and manual brewing methods, a coarser grind is generally used. Fruity and floral coffees can work particularly well with these methods, although the ideal coffee ultimately depends on your preferred flavour profile.

Grinding whole coffee beans shortly before brewing also gives you greater control over grind size and helps preserve their aromatic qualities until preparation.

Water Tank, Steam Wand and Maintenance: Practical Features to Consider

Beyond the type of coffee machine itself, several practical features can make a significant difference in everyday use:

  • Water tank: a larger tank, around 1.5 litres or more, can be convenient if you prepare several drinks throughout the day. Also check that it can be easily removed or accessed for filling and cleaning.
  • Steam wand: particularly useful if you enjoy cappuccinos, flat whites or lattes. Steam performance and ease of use can vary considerably between machines.
  • Maintenance: an often overlooked factor when choosing a coffee machine. Bean-to-cup machines require regular cleaning of components such as the coffee grounds container, brewing system and milk circuit where applicable. Capsule machines generally involve less daily maintenance, but they still require regular cleaning and descaling according to water hardness and the manufacturer's recommendations.

Manual or Automatic Coffee Machine: How Involved Do You Want to Be?

Lever machines and manual espresso machines with portafilters are designed for coffee drinkers who want greater control over the brewing process. They require more practice, but allow you to adjust variables such as dose, grind size and extraction.

Automatic and bean-to-cup coffee machines are better suited to those looking for convenience and consistency in everyday use. Many models allow drink settings to be adjusted while keeping preparation straightforward, even for beginners.

For greater precision, a coffee scale allows you to measure coffee and water accurately. Weighing your ingredients is particularly useful when you want to reproduce a successful espresso or filter coffee recipe consistently.

FAQ About Coffee Machines

Which Coffee Machine Should You Choose for Specialty Coffee?

The right coffee machine for specialty coffee depends largely on how much time and control you want during preparation. A bean-to-cup machine with a built-in grinder is a convenient option for everyday use, while a manual espresso machine paired with a good grinder provides greater control over grind size, dose and extraction.

In every case, the quality and freshness of the coffee, the grind size, water and brewing parameters all contribute to the final result.

What Is the Difference Between a Capsule Coffee Machine and an Espresso Machine?

A capsule coffee machine, such as a compatible Nespresso system, prioritises convenience and consistency: there is no need to grind or dose the coffee manually.

A traditional espresso machine using ground coffee or freshly ground beans provides greater control over variables such as dose, grind size and extraction. This makes it possible to adjust the cup more precisely according to the coffee and your preferences.

Do Terres de Café Nespresso-Compatible Capsules Work with All Nespresso Machines?

Our Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules are designed for compatible machines using the Nespresso Original capsule format. They are not designed for Nespresso Vertuo machines, which use a different capsule system. Always check the compatibility information provided on the product page before ordering.

Do You Need a Separate Grinder with an Espresso Machine?

If your espresso machine does not include a built-in grinder, a dedicated coffee grinder is strongly recommended. Grinding immediately before extraction gives you greater control over freshness and allows you to adjust the grind as the coffee and brewing conditions change.

For espresso, choose a quality burr grinder with sufficiently precise grind adjustment. Both conical and flat burr grinders can deliver excellent results when they are well designed and suited to espresso brewing.
